If I Stay by Gayle Forman Review (SPOILER FREE)

if i stay

After many failed attempts at trying to write a synopsis for this book without giving too much away, I decided to use the Amazon description:

“In the blink of an eye everything changes. Seventeen year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall what happened afterwards, watching her own damaged body being taken from the wreck. Little by little she struggles to put together the pieces- to figure out what she has lost, what she has left, and the very difficult choice she must make. Heartwrenchingly beautiful, this will change the way you look at life, love, and family.”

I loved the characters of this book. They were all very relatable and heart warming. I liked how Forman showed us their different personalities by describing how they acted during Mia’s “situation”.

Mia is a cellist who was recently accepted into Juliard. She has an out of body experience after a car crash and contemplates what her future will be like if she stays, and how those around her will change is she “leaves”.

Mia was definitely my favorite character in the novel. I don’t think there was a single scene in this book where she made me roll my eyes. However, I got a bit grossed out when she confessed to wanting to lick they sweat off her boyfriend’s face when he finished a concert.

I felt that she was very well developed. The way the author interrogated Mia’s backstory into the story gave the reader a connection to Mia that would keep growing throughout the story.

Adam is the boyfriend of Mia. He is an aspiring rock star who is growing distant with Mia.

In my opinion, Adam was O.K. There were some scenes where I found myself becoming annoyed with him, however it wasn’t enough to distract me from the story.

The Romance:

The romance between Adam and Mia was the reason why I gave the book 4.5 stars. Even though the romance was enjoyable, the romance didn’t have closure at the end of the book.

Throughout the book, Mia will have memories of her loving Adam, and scenes of her thinking about ending it with Adam.

I understand that there is a sequel titles “Where She Went”. I will definitely pick up this book and hopefully get some closure.

If I Stay was a very quick and short read. I would recommend it as a mourning period read or if you are in a reading slump.

From the beginning to the end of the book, I could not put it down.

Writing Style:

The writing style of If I Stay was beautiful. I thought it was interesting how half of the book was memories of Mia’s and the other half was Mia’s perspective in present-tense.

Final Thoughts:

In conclusion, this book was very good. I thought that the characters were relatable and very fun to read about. The pacing of the plot never faltered. Highly recommend.

WARNING: This book gives you all the feels. 😥
